REINTERPRETING THE LOUNGING FEMALE FIGURE in painting
(It is about reinterpreting the female figure in painting overall)
In many of the works, i paint lounging female figures who are not doing anything.
At the moment I believe the way to distinguish my paintings from the past depictions of women in painting is to actively characterise them - the way i did this was to paint their objects (objects of their surroundings). These ofcourse carry meaning, and thus also influence the interpretations of the women - perhaps allowing them to be interpreted more than just a 2D representation of a woman!
Focusing on detail - of the face, the skin and the joints under the skin.
The figures are imagined as personalities/ characters with volume - existing outside the 2D surface - painted in 2D
The figures cannot exist without context - so i focus not only on the women, but also on their surroundings ( in this case being the bedroom, mirror, ashtrays, joints, reciepts, cigarettes, and a smartphone).
I use my body as a reference, although the paintings are not necessarily self-portraits.
